European defense company ARX Robotics has introduced the Combat Gereon, its first AI-powered combat unmanned ground vehicle developed in partnership with Ukrainian companies. The system represents a significant step toward “first unmanned contact” warfare, designed to perform high-risk missions and reduce soldier casualties on active battlefields.

What you should know: The Combat Gereon combines proven robotics with AI-enabled autonomous functions specifically adapted for real combat conditions based on Ukrainian military feedback.

  • The vehicle can carry payloads up to 500 kilograms and operate over distances of 40 kilometers.
  • It performs reconnaissance, route clearance, and forward observation missions in high-risk areas.
  • The system features modular design allowing flexible use and scalable production across Europe and Ukraine.

Who else is involved: ARX Robotics developed the system through strategic partnerships that strengthen European-Ukrainian defense cooperation.

  • Ukrainian defense company Frontline collaborated on development based on frontline military recommendations.
  • Valhalla Turrets integrated the LOKI remote weapon station and helped adapt the system to European certification standards.
  • The German government previously financed the purchase of 30 units in November 2024.

The big picture: This launch reflects growing integration between European defense technology and Ukrainian battlefield experience, creating combat-tested systems for broader European defense.

  • ARX Robotics plans to establish a technology and maintenance center in Ukraine.
  • The modular design enables production scaling across both European and Ukrainian facilities.
  • Similar collaborations include Ukrainian company Frontline partnering with Estonia’s Milrem Robotics to integrate grenade launcher turrets on ground drones.

What they’re saying: “Combat Gereon is the next step in our mission to protect soldiers and strengthen Europe’s defense resilience,” said Mark Witfeld, co-founder and CEO of ARX Robotics.

What’s next: The Combat Gereon will make its official debut at the DSEI UK 2025 international defense exhibition in London, displayed alongside complementary weapon systems.
